Q: What is the difference between a 1993-02 Camaro SS or Z28?
What is the difference between the 1993-02 Camaro SS or Z28? Which model trim is higher between the SS or the Z28? I believe the RS is the base model with the V6 engine and the SS and the Z28 comes with the V8 engines.

I have a friend who used to own a 1997 Camaro SS V8 w/leather interior.

A: Camaro – base model which comes with a Series II 3800 3.8L V6 engine rated at 200 HP. Prior to 1996, the standard engine was a 3.4L V6 with 160 HP with the 3.8L being an option in mid-1995. A 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic (4L60E) transmission is available. A performance package (Y87) is also available starting in 1996 which includes a posi rear, rear disc brakes, 3.42 gearing in the A4, exhaust pipes/tips on both sides, and sport steering ratio.

RS – appearance package available starting in 1996 for the base Camaro (V6) only. It includes ground effects and an up-level spoiler. “RS” badges are located on the front fenders and rear passenger bumper. In 1998 the RS was dropped, however the appearance package was still available as an option.

Z28 – The high end model. From 1993 – 1995 it came with a 275HP 5.7L V8 (LT1) engine. In 1996 power was increased to 285HP by going to a 2 catalytic converter setup. In 1998 the Z28 went to the all new LS1 which was rated at 305 HP and 335 ft-lbs of torque. A black roof treatment was standard on all 1993 and 1994 Z28s, and 1995 models and later offered a roof that was the same color as the rest of the body as an option. A 6-speed (Borg-Warner T-56) or 4-speed automatic (4L60E) transmission is available. The suspension and brakes are enhanced for improved handling. Two available Preferred Equipment Groups make the car either moderately or fully loaded. “Z28″ badges are located on the front fenders and rear passenger bumper. In 1993, an Indy 500 Pace Car version (with automatic transmission) was made with a black and white paint scheme and multi-colored paint stripes along each side of the car.

SS – available as an upgrade to the Z28 model starting in late-1995 (as a 1996 model). The package include a functional ram air hood scoop and reworked exhaust manifolds resulting in 305 HP and 335 ft-lbs of torque. An optional freer flowing exhaust system brings HP to 315 and torque to 342 ft-lbs. In 1998 with the introduction of the LS1 engine, power was boosted to 320HP, and with the optional SLP exhaust power was boosted to 327HP. The stock wheels and tires are replaced with 5-spoke 17″ ZR-1 style wheels with 275/40ZR/17 tires. Hurst shifter and Torsen differential were available options. Bilstein shocks, stiffer rate springs/bushings, and a larger front sway bar make up the optional Level-II suspension. The stock spoiler is replaced with sleeker looking one. “SS” badges replace the “Z28″ badges on the front fenders and rear passenger bumper. All cars were shipped as stock Z28s to Street Legal Performance (SLP) Engineering where the above modifications were made through 1997. After that, GM made the modifications on its own assembly line.

SS/LT4 – available only in 1997 with all of the standard and optional SS equipment, but the LT1 was replaced by a balanced and blueprinted LT4 engine with 330 HP. Additionally, they got a new stainless steel exhaust system and exhaust manifolds, and a new Bilstein performance suspension set-up. The cars had to be special ordered as 30th Anniversary cars with a 6-speed transmission, and no T-tops or convertible, and they were then sent to SLP for modification. Production was limited to 100 cars.

Q: What’s the difference between the chevy camaro LS and the chevy camaro SS?
I really like the chevy camaro but I’m not sure the difference between the LS and the SS?
I really like the 2010 chevy camaro but I’m not sure the difference between the LS and the SS?

A: The SS is sportier. Check out the details here:

http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_Glance.aspx?year=2010&make=Chevrolet&model=Camaro&trimid=-1

This tells you every detail you need to know, including mpg difference, interior features such as leather wrapped steering wheel, and external features such as fog lights (which do not come on an LS).

Q: Why is the 0-60 time between a transam and a camaro ss different?
I have researched the average 0-60 for a 2002
trans am=5.0sec
camaro ss=5.2sec

These cars have the same engine (ls1) with the same horsepower. Why the difference in the 0-60 time?

A: That doesn’t mean the Trans Am is faster; the weight of the driver, weather conditions, road condition and a host of other factors can make one car quicker than another if not tested under the exact same conditions. I only take notice of a difference in 0-60 times when the difference is .4 or greater, and even then it CAN be misleading.

Q: Need an estimate on how much power steering for a 1969 Camaro SS would cost?
I am lookin to purchase a 69 Camaro SS (Clone). The onyl thing holding me back is that there is no power steering. I have no clue how much something like that would cost me in parts and labor? I am looking for a good estimate thats all.

A: This should pretty much cover all the parts that you’ll need. These prices are for first gen. Camaro reproduction parts. There are numerous pumps, brackets, and pulleys that would work and probably cost less, but if you want to use rebuilt original or reproduction Camaro parts here you go.

A rebuilt power steering box is around $250
Pressure side hose – $25
Return side hose – $15
A rebuilt pump – $95
Pump bracket set – $85
Pump pulley – $80
Pitman arm – $80
Column coupler – $35

So you’re looking at about $665 in parts. If you can find a complete kit it may be a little cheaper. Labor would probably be $500-750. If you are mechanically inclined at all, it’s not a difficult job. It’s a little time consuming, but not very complicated.

Q: What can I do to make 2000 Camaro SS wheels fit my 1996 Camaro RS?
I bought a set of 2000 Camaro SS wheels thinking they would fit right on my 1996 Camaro RS. The axle hole on the SS wheels is 1/16th of an inch too small to fit. Is there an easy way to maybe get it machined that much bigger safely? I have seen the wheels on other Camaros like mine so i was just wondering if anyone knew.

A: try putting a spacer on the back of the wheel. If they don’t fit yours. I’m sure they would fit mine.

Q: How do I know if a 1967 Camaro SS is a clone or the real thing?
i plan on buying a 1967 Camaro SS and i dont know what to look for to see if its a clone or not. what should i look for?

A: I would go with the first answer because that is what i would do as well as run a title check

Q: What is the top speed of a 2010 camaro ss is it goes 160 in 4th gear?
I was wondering what the top speed was in all out 6th gear is it like 175 maybe idk
btw does the 2010 camaro ss come stock supercharged

A: well considering the gear ratios and the fact that the car only gets 25 mpg on the highway because it’s transmission gears are relatively short (not because it is terribly unaireodynamic as previously implied). without the limiter, all stock; it should do just north of 170mph. there is a Popular Mecahnic’s article where a limiter-less Camaro supposedly ran 174 at Bonneville.

Also, if you want a good idea of the potential top speed, look at the 05-06 Pontiac GTO. roughly the same weight, slightly less hp(400 vs 425), and gear ratios. without the limiter the GTO would easily do 170+. Ditto for the pontiac G8/Holden Commador, which the Camaro shares most of it’s chassis and drivetrain with.

in fact…more than a few magazines have tested stock SRT-8 Dodge Challengers into a low speedometer indicated 180 range. in reality it was actually 168mph. so considering that a Dodge challenger is much heavier AND has the same hp, AND has less gears (automatic), a SS Camaro should easily do 170+mph.

Q: about how much would it be to change a automatic trans. to a manual trans. in a 99 camaro ss?
i have a 99 camaro ss and i was thinking about converting it in to a 6 speed? about how much would it be.

A: your probably looking to spend more than what the car is worth. Its not just tranny, you have to switch out a new radiator and cross members installing a clutch system buying new center console for the new stick shift may even have to get a new drive shaft I dont know if they are the same length or not. It seems like alot of money just to have fun but if your going racn and making it a dragcar by all means do it.

Q: How much will the 2010 camaro ss cost in 2012?
I dont have money right now and i want to get the 2010 camaro ss i was wondering how much it will cost in 2012 does anyone have an estimate???

A: Depends on the mileage, condition, and demand.

Q: What would win in a race and or road test a Hennesy camaro ss or a Hennesy gtr 600?
My friends and I are in an argument that a hennesy camaro ss would dust a hennesy gtr 600 what do you think let me no.

A: depends who is driving it but the Camaro def. has the edge.

update from your last question on the mitsubishi 3000gt:

besides the K&N Cold air intake; if you want to go all out, you will want to get two in-line turbos (two different sizes to cover more RPM ranges) a liquid Bell inter-cooler set up (for the turbos). a completely new suspension (jegs racing suspension set up) you will want direct port injection NOS with two bottles, you will want to replace almost all the gaskets with Titanium ring ones (NOS will eat your car alive. you will want a XR-1 Racing Exhaust system. you will then want to put goodyear racing run flats on it and probably 22in. rims depending on your taste. all in all to do this right you are talking about $15,000 + parts and labor. for a 1997 mitsubishi 3000gt its not worth dropping all of that into it. go with the cold air intake, suspension, and the exhaust system. if you want to go further add the turbo, but if you put NOS in that thing you will bun up your piston rings and cause damage to the manifold. it will never race again after one. plus in most areas NOS is illegal, be careful, you have an older car and you do not want to drop 20,000 on something that is going to die. you might be better off finding an newer one. good luck man

Q: Which exhaust to pick between 2 for my 2001 camaro ss?
I recently asked what kind of exhaust i should put on my 2001 camaro ss that isn’t too expensive but has a low aggressive sound. I found out that corsa or borla would be the best pick and glasspacks and flowmasters are not good. So I’m going with either Corsa or Borla. Which one is cheaper? And which one will give me a better sound and good performance? Thanks!

A: Flowmasters….regardless of what rumors you may have heard.

Q: Could you modify a 2002 Camaro SS to beat a brand new GT500 mustang?
Im a fan of Camaro, i like mustang too, but im wondering if i bought a 2002 camaro ss for cheap (Since the economy is so bad) could i supercharge it or do something to it to make gt500’s s**** itself? My friend has one, i’d definitly like to show it up lol.

A: as far as the 2002s go the ss is actually a collectors edition so they are pretty expensive..go with the z28 the difference is only 15 hp which comes mostly from the different exhaust which you will probably change anyways. but ya you put a pro charger, some heads, exhaust, and intake and that shit will rip it..the ls1 is amazing.. btw i have a 2002 z28 for sale :D let me know

Q: Is there a 1986 camaro ss true dual exhaust?
Is there a 1986 camaro ss true dual exhaust? Or will i have to make my own?

A: Ya no ss in the third gens. Anyway no one makes a true dual kit for a third generation camaro. And my suggestion is to not go with doing it yourself or having anyone fab up one up. Why? Because there is really nowhere to mount a muffler under there and I can almost guarantee that after a while it will start to hang low and eventually will start to drag. The single system flows just as good as a dual will and it will all tuck up nice and neat. SLP makes an excellent system but so do flowmaster and magna flow. Just depends on how much you want to spend. Hope this helps.

Q: Think I can get a 2010 Camaro SS for 25k if I pay in cash?
The sticker price is 33k for a black 2010 camaro ss. Think it’s possible to buy it for 25k ( or less) this weekend?

I live in a city of about 15k people.

A: You might be able to actually get it for sticker price, if you’re lucky. Dealers are marking these up, above MSRP, knowing people will buy them either way. Also, never buy a first year model car, unless you like being a guinea pig for the car’s problems.

Q: What is considered to be Chevrolet’s faster Camaro, the SS or Z28?
I’ve been looking and comparing all the new pony cars and saw that Hennessey built the HPE550 Camaro. Motor Trend compares this car to the Camaro Z28 that is still in production and I had thought that in past years the Camaro SS was superior to the Z28. If someone could clear up this confusion I was appreciate it.

Thanks,

A: Yes, from 1997 to 2002, the SS was top dog! But back when the 1968 Camaro Z/28 was first introduced, it was king. And that’s what Chevy is going back to.

So, when Chevy brings out the new Z/28 (arriving late 2011 as a 2012 from initial reports), it is reported to have a supercharged LSA V-8 tuned to 556 HP & 551 pound feet of torque!!

So the Z/28 will be king of the hill once again, as long as Chevy goes through with it.
